I just realized I never summarized Kate's Fourth Birthday happenings, which given the 10-month build up was a big oversight. Kate was so so excited about her birthday but it did pose a challenge. She was just 2 weeks into school when it came, so who to invite? 22 kids from her new class? All of her old classmates? Everyone? Yes. And then some.
So we did what we could. A relaxed affair near Bixler Park, with all of the standard trappings: pizza, cake, goodie bags. Everything had to be "Frozen." We were totally beholden to the weather and thunderstorms were threatened, but in the end it was warm (hot even) and clear. In fact, our problem was that the Frozen (but not frozen) cake melted into a pile of blue goop. Kids didn't seem to mind. She had a wonderful time and I think it was exactly what she wanted...exactly the same birthday as every other four year old girl.
It was great to see her old friends...they all were so happy to play. It's easy to trivialize childrens' friendships but when you see the sheer joy they have of seeing each other after a long time, it's wonderful. And it was great to get to know the families in her new class too.
